For a minute, I forgot who I was.
TRAPPED IN THE RABBIT HOLE LIKE ALICE IN WONDERLAND.
Sulked + slid to the side in my dark hoodie with my head held low.
PLAYED MARCO POLO WITH THE DEVIL. GOD, CAN YOU SAVE ME?
Tiptoed in the shadows, I scuffed my sneakers trying to pop out and show mothafuckas who I am.
LIKE KENDRICK, MY WORDS UNRAVEL THE ENCRYPTED MESSAGE TO EXPOSE THE TRUTH.
But I kept trippin.
THINKING THERE’S NO SPACE AT THE TABLE, BUT A NIGGA LIKE ME BUILT IT.

The inspiration…
This poetry collab is inspired by Jacquie Verbal.
Don’t forget who you are if you find yourself wandering in Wonderland. Don’t sleep on the opportunities that await you - it’s what you’ve been wishing for. Don’t dismiss the people that push + pull you in the direction where you need to go. You’ve tiptoed in the shadows long enough because you were unsure of who you are + where you need to be. Pop out unapologetically even if you trip a few times. Stop letting bitter, soul-sucking worthless people steal your joy + plant seeds where they don’t belong. They’re just unhappy in their own shit. Believing you can take up space is not impossible.
Thank you Jacquie for cowriting this poem with me!
Peace,
Alex B
